It was in 1999 that Noah Ngeny of Kenya broke the 1000 meters record wih a time of 2:11:96. Other track field world records consist of the highest jump at 2.45m by Javier Sotomayor of Cuba in 1993. The outdoor pole vault record is 6.14m by Sergey Bubka in 1992.
Current track field world records for females are headed by US’s Florence Griffith Joyner for the hundred-meter run since 1988, Russia’s Svetlana Masterkova made record for the thousand-meter last 1996. Bulgaria’s Stefka Kostadinova made the highest jump recorded in 1987. It was Russia’s Tatyana Lysenko that made history with the hammer throw in 2007. Russia’s Olimpiada Ivanova in 2005 recorded best of 20K road walk event.
Olympic track field records are from Canada’s Donavan Bailey in the 100 meters, Michael Johnson of US in the 200 hundred meters while 10,000 meters was led by Ethiopia’s Haile Gebrselassie among others. Women’s 10,000-meter run was headed by Fernanda Ribeiro of Portugal in 1996.
