In the relays, a team of 4 athletes have to pass the baton, one to another, until the last runner hits the finishing line. In the 4x100m relays, the runners at placed at 100m intervals around the track in the specified lanes. There can be no crossing of lanes. In the 4x400m relays, the process is much simpler. Each runner passes the baton to the next runner upon completion of one lap. The relays also represent very interesting events to watch.
