Field Events

It is a common knowledge that the field events being highlighted during the Olympic competitions are one of the most anticipated in the world. With competitors hailing from different countries or nations, the Olympic atmosphere can’t get anymore exciting.

Let us begin by examining each of the sports included during the Olympic field events. Discus throwing is an athletic competition that involves athletes throwing a circular disc for the farthest distance at a certain landing zone. This is an event open to both male and female players, and the weight and diameter of the disc to be thrown varies according to gender. The winner is obviously determined by the competitor who can throw the disc furthest.

The modern hammer throw is another exciting sports event where the main objective of the athletes is to throw a heavy steel ball attached to a long wire with a definite handle to a great distance. Like any other throwing competitions, the winning athlete here is determined of who can throw the steel ball at the farthest distance. This sport is also open for both men and women, and the weight of each steel ball to be thrown also varies.

Javelin throwing is another event that involves spear-like javelins to be thrown at a certain distance. The javelins to be used are usually made out of fiberglass or carbon fiber. In this event, each athlete is given three throws in order to throw their own respective javelins at the farthest possible distance that they can. The point of the javelin that will touch the ground first is the one that will be measured.

Shot put is another sports event that is contested by “putting” a heavy metal ball, more popularly known as the shot, to the farthest distance as possible. Players must stay inside a circle of about seven inches in diameter before putting the ball. The distance will be measured at a specified landing zone where the disturbance done by the ball to the soil will play as a vital factor.

Meanwhile, high jump and long jump events measure the strength and skill of an athlete for the former requires a player to jump high enough in order for him or her to scale a horizontal bar while the latter requires athletes to land at the farthest distance from a certain take-off point. Pole vault is another popular sports competition with the main objective of athletes using a long, flexible pole in order to scale a horizontal bar. And lastly, the triple jump is contested by athletes tasked to run at a certain distance until they reach the take-off point where the distance of their 3-step jump will be measured. The winner is definitely the one that will scale the farthest jump distance.
