Race Walking

One of the athletic events being contested all over the world is race walking. It’s a popular participatory sport that is usually used as a main event in benefits or events for a cause. Race walking is categorized as a distance event and is part of the many track and field sports. Race walking may appear like running to those unfamiliar with the sport but you can notice the difference with the movement of the legs of race walk athletes.

The race walkers use their hamstring and gluteus to speed up walking. On the other hand, runners use their quadriceps to lift their legs. The race walking technique is keeping your body low to the ground. You should maintain your shoulders while your arms move through your hips. In keeping up the speed in a race-walk, you should be able to have a rapid leg movement while maintaining the arms’ strength. You will even see race walkers that look like they are already skimming over the ground. That is actually the right way to do it.

If you see race walkers beginning to lift their legs, it means they are loosing their technique as a result of tiredness. This won’t bring them maximum efficiency. In fact, there are strict rules to race walking. The two most important rules of race walking are called the lifting and the creeping. The lifting rule involves the lifting of the heel and toe. The rule states that the racewalker’s back toe should not be lifted or leaves the ground until the heel of that race walker’s front foot has already touched the ground.

On the other hand, the rule of creeping states that which ever leg is doing the support, should straighten anytime from the point of contact to the ground before the race walker’s body passes over it. If it doesn’t straighten, then judges monitoring the event will provide warnings or even a disqualification. It may seem hard when reading about these rules but would you know that some of the best professional race walkers can finish a mile in less than six minutes?
