Decathlon

From the Greek words "deka" which means ten, and "athlon" meaning contest, it’s easy to define what a decathlon is. Decathlon is simply a sporting competition that involves ten events, specifically track and field. The decathlon scoring makes use of a point system for each event to determine the overall winner not just by the position in the individual disciplines.

The decathlon is a competition for men. The equivalent event for females is called heptathlon. Usually, the decathlon sport is held for two days, each having five events. The decathlon sports test the athletes’ endurance and speed. At the same time, the strength and skill are tested too.

The usual decathlon events in order are as follows. First day is made up of the 100-meter run, long jump, then the shot put, high jump, and the 400-meter run. Next day is where the 110-meter hurdles are being done. Next to it is the discus, then the pole vault. The javelin and the 1500 meters come last. The first day is where the speed and jumping ability are measured. The technique and endurance are being measured on the second day.

The decathlon background originated from the sport of pentathlon, meaning a five event-competition. It was started in the 708 BC in Olympia. Now, there’s the Olympic decathlon being contested in the Olympic Games. If you’d like get into decathlon, you better start your decathlon training or join a decathlon sports camp to get you started. There you will be able to build your endurance, technique, speed, power, and your ability to jump as high as you can. A lot of decathlon training camps will help you develop these skills and abilities if you plan to follow the footsteps of Dave Johnson decathlon athlete who had won bronze at the 1992 Barcelona Olympic Games even with a broken foot.

There’s also Bryan Clay, Uwe Freimuth, and Daley Thompson to name a few of the best decathlon athletes in the world. Dan O’Brien was the winner among the other 1992 summer Olympics decathlon athletes. The 1976 Olympics decathlon winner was Bruce Jenner while the 1956 Olympic decathlon champion was from New Jersey, USA, Milt Campbell.
