Discus

The Discus is a world-recognized sports or athletics throwing event under the track and field competition category. The sport of shot put and discus throwing are actually very much related in nature. Athletes of discus throw are tasked to throw a discus, a heavy, rounded object with a normal diameter of 220 mm used for the men’s event and 181 mm for the women’s event. The weight of the discus to be thrown also varies for both male and female players, the former having to throw 2 kg worth of weight while the latter 1 kg.

Like any other sport, there are some discus rules that need to be followed by every player. An example of this rule is the place where the disc must land, and it must reach the designated landing zone where there are lines that will mark the forty-degree or sixty-degree arcs respectively.

The common motion of proper discus throwing will usually require the athlete to be in an initial position that will point or face away from the targeted direction or trajectory of the throw. Once the disc is thrown, the distance from the front edge of the landing area or circle where the disc has landed will then be measured, and distance measures are rounded off to the nearest half-inch or centimeter as prescribed. It is a very important rule for the discus thrower to not leave the throwing area or circle until the disc has landed and he or she has already been given the clearance to exit the throwing area.

Many are definitely interested as to how to throw a discus properly. For this particular aspect, many discus throwers actually have a common discus throwing technique that can be easily observed during related competitions like the Olympic discus throwing event for example. The basic motion or discus technique is shown by the forehanded sidearm movement, wherein the disc is spun off either between the middle finger or index finger, and will then be spun clockwise by a right-handed thrower or counter-clockwise by a left handed thrower if viewed or observed above. Experts recommend a player to desire throwing the disc at a much faster rate to increase its gyroscopic ability and to throw the disc at a moderate wind to achieve great distances for every throw. The pair of discus throwing shoes to be used by the player also plays a key role of a player’s success during major competition so it is definitely advisable that players wear their most comfortable discus shoes.

The whole world truly recognizes the event of Olympic discus throw as one of the most prestigious competitions related to this sport. If you want to start young, there are actually some early discus drills young athletes can use to become a competitive discus throwing players in the near future.
